Portrait of César Franck

Franck, César

César Franck was born in Liège in 1822 and died in Paris in 1890. César Franck was a French Romantic composer. His career helped shape the musical culture of the time, and his music is still frequently performed and recorded today. He gave his first concerts there in 1834 and began studying privately in Paris in 1835, where Anton Reicha was among his teachers. In 1859, he became titular organist at the Church of Sainte-Clotilde, a position he held for the rest of his life. Recordings and performances continue to make this music readily accessible to new generations worldwide. His distinct, expressive musical legacy lives on.
