Martinů: Larmes de couteau / Comedy on the Bridge

Martin? Bohuslav was a musical chameleon. On the one hand, he wrote in an unmistakable style, but on the other hand, he employed every conceivable color and style that was currently fashionable or fascinated him. These two short operas compiled here are a prime example of this. On the one hand, there is the almost Dadaist masterpiece "Larmes de couteau" in the original French version, in which Martin? set a wild libretto to sounds ranging from jazz to Stravinsky. In contrast is the English-language version of his "Comedy on the Bridge", which first brought him some recognition, a work with completely different music and yet only seven years removed from the "Knife Tears".
