Portrait of Bohuslav Martinů

Martinů, Bohuslav

Bohuslav Martinů was born in Polička in 1890 and died in Basel in 1959. Bohuslav Martinů was a Czech composer of modern classical music. He wrote 6 symphonies, 15 operas, 14 ballet scores, and a large collection of orchestral, chamber, vocal, and instrumental works. He became a violinist in the Czech Philharmonic and studied briefly with the Czech composer and violinist Josef Suk. After leaving Czechoslovakia for Paris in 1923, Martinů consciously broke away from the Romantic style in which he had been trained. He was prolific and composed chamber, orchestral, choral, and instrumental works rapidly. His distinctive, expressive, imaginative, influential, and enduring musical legacy lives on.
