Description
In 2025, the Salzburg Festival presented Gaetano Donizetti’s "Maria Stuarda" in a new production by Ulrich Rasche. With his characteristic moving stage constructions and precise choreography of movement and space, Rasche transforms the bel canto historical drama into an intense piece of music theater about power, rivalry, and the depths of human nature.
At the center are Lisette Oropesa as Mary Stuart and Kate Lindsey as Queen Elisabetta. With great dramatic and vocal presence, they craft the famous confrontation between the two sovereigns into a psychologically complex conflict. From the podium of the Vienna Philharmonic, Antonello Manacorda unfolds Donizetti’s score with a sense for dramatic tension and musical elegance.
