Portrait of Leoš Janáček

Janáček, Leoš

Leoš Janáček was born in 1854 in Hukvaldy and died in 1928 in Ostrava. Leoš Janáček was a Czech composer. He drew inspiration from Moravian and other Slavic music, including Eastern European folk music, to create an original, modern musical style. His earlier musical work was influenced by contemporaries such as Antonín Dvořák, but around the turn of the century, he began to integrate his earlier studies of national folk music as well as his transcriptions of the "speech melodies" of spoken language to create a modern, highly original synthesis. His distinctive, expressive, imaginative, influential, and enduring music is still frequently performed today. This unique, expressive musical legacy lives on.
