The score for “The Prophets” was the last one Kurt Weill composed in Europe and also his last setting of an extensive German text before adopting the language of his new American home. Musically, Weill draws on all his major compositions, from “Mahagonny” to “The Seven Deadly Sins” and the Second Symphony, while also anticipating elements of his future Broadway works. The “Four Walt Whitman Songs” were written in the aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor and reveal Weill’s most American, patriotic side: dramatic, catchy, and even sentimental, familiar yet entirely different.
