Vienna: The stuff of dreams

This anthology of Bernard de Vienne's works is a musical portrait of the composer and showcases the diversity of ensembles for which he writes. His birth in Tunisia and his studies in ethnomusicology are starting points that give rise to a keen sensitivity to the music of the whole world, and traces of this are evident in part of his work. His interest in philosophy, literature, poetry, and the sciences runs through his entire oeuvre. Vienne's constant search for new ways of playing and the joy he takes in his instrument (the flute) inspire him to create colorful, imaginative, and dynamic compositions. With the exception of his Fourth Quartet, which was recorded especially for this box set, all the pieces on these two CDs are live concert recordings and bear witness to his artistic affinities.
