Spohr: Chamber Music

“The Romantic Room” is a comprehensive six-disc release highlighting Louis Spohr’s prolific and often overlooked chamber music, brought vividly to life by the chamber musicians of the WDR Sinfonieorchester. Once celebrated as the “German Paganini” and revered throughout Europe, Spohr was a central figure of early Romanticism—an innovator who shaped the transition from classical refinement to Romantic expression. This collection presents his elegant string quintets and sextets, daring double quartets, and distinctive potpourris, portraying a composer whose expressive power and artistic integrity remain as relevant today as ever. Spohr’s chamber works are multifaceted and musically complex, offering both technical challenges and expressive depth. These interpretations reveal a composer deeply rooted in tradition, yet unafraid to experiment, combining lyrical intimacy with bold structural ideas. Earlier recordings by the WDR Sinfonieorchester Chamber Players include the highly acclaimed “Brahms: String Sextets” (Diapason d’Or) and “String Quintets”.
