Description

With “November,” Julius Berger presents a personal concept album in which the cello becomes the vehicle for a quiet, autumnally condensed sonic journey. The program revolves around works for cello and piano as well as for two cellos, uniting classical centrality, contemporary boundary-pushing, and spiritual reconnection into a symmetrically structured whole.

At its center is Schubert’s “Arpeggione Sonata,” serving as the program’s lyrical point of repose and reference, sustained by that fragile inner tension that makes its melodic breath so distinctive. Around it cluster Klaus Hinrich Stahmer’s naturally grounded “Bergwind,” Sciarrino’s nocturnal study of perception “Ai limiti della notte,” Morton Feldman’s breath of duration, and Mark Andres’s approach to the threshold of silence.

With Hildegard von Bingen and Stahmer’s concluding prayer of thanksgiving, the gaze opens up beyond the present. Thus “November” appears not as a loose sequence of compelling pieces, but as a cohesive album about sound, memory, nature, and inwardness—sustained by Berger’s cello and its concentrated dialogue with the piano and second cello.
