Sciarrino, Salvatore

Salvatore Sciarrino was born in Palermo in 1947. The Italian composer developed his musical foundations largely through self-study and also engaged with the visual arts at an early age. Chamber music and music theatre hold particular importance in his work. Sciarrino focuses attention on the finest changes in sound, on overtones, and on the relationship between sound and silence. This creates musical spaces that allow for concentrated listening to small gestures and barely perceptible transitions. In addition to his creative work, he taught at various Italian conservatories. His works open up an independent perspective on contemporary music and reveal themselves anew again and again in performances and recordings.
