Mozart: Sinfonia Concertante / Symphony No. 39 / Così Fan Tutte Overture

The adventure “Simply Mozart,” dedicated to the composer’s last three symphonies, reaches its conclusion with this third installment and the 39th Symphony. The program also includes other works that can be linked to the main work in a particular way: the overture to Così fan tutte—“a miniature version of the opera,” as Julien Chauvin puts it—and the Sinfonia concertante for violin and viola. The latter was composed one year after Mozart’s second visit to Paris and was directly inspired by the practice established there of having several soloists perform in dialogue with the orchestra—a form that was very popular at the end of the 18th century. “Mozart has left an indelible mark on us—and our hearts—with the second movement, one of the most moving he ever wrote,” says Julien Chauvin. In this recording, his violin engages in a lively dialogue with Amihai Grosz’s viola, who has already recorded two albums for Alpha Classics (ALPHA634 & ALPHA1013).
