Description

How did Mozart hear his own music at home in Salzburg? This recording provides the answer, as it was not only made in the house where he lived for many years, but also on the clavichord he used to compose The Magic Flute, La clemenza di Tito, and the Requiem. Although the keyboard of the clavichord has the same five-octave range as the fortepianos Mozart used for concerts, its softer sound limited it to domestic use, so that it could be heard by family members or other acquaintances who happened to be present. Baritone Georg Nigl and early keyboard specialist Alexander Gergelyfi have assembled an intimate program of arias, overtures, cantatas, songs, fantasies, rondos, and even the poignant Lacrimosa from the Requiem. This unique album allows us to enter Mozart's childhood home in Salzburg, where we sit beside an instrument he himself played and listen to two extraordinary performers who are both irrevocably in love with its genius loci.
