Description

Gian Carlo Menotti is primarily known as an opera composer, but he also left behind an extensive orchestral oeuvre. “Menotti: Orchestral Discoveries” presents four of these works, including three world premiere recordings. The “Lewisohn Stadium Fanfare” was composed for the opening of the 47th summer season at the City College of New York’s Lewisohn Stadium, which served as an outdoor venue for the New York Philharmonic for many years. This is the first time the work has been heard on recording.

Also being recorded for the first time is the original version of Menotti’s only symphony, Symphony No. 1 in A minor “The Halcyon.” The program is completed by the suite from the ballet “Sebastian” and the suite from the opera “Goya,” which is also being recorded for the first time here. The Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano performs under the direction of Francesco Cilluffo.
