Mahler: Symphony No. 1

Paavo Järvi and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich present the second part of their complete Mahler cycle – with the First Symphony, known as “Titan,” in reference to the novel of the same name by the poet Jean Paul, whom Mahler greatly admired. Although Mahler rejected this title three years after the symphony’s premiere in 1893, the work – like many of Mahler’s compositions – has “a distinctly programmatic character. Mahler was a composer who could explore and question the inner world of human beings in a unique way, delving into what goes on in our innermost depths.”
