Composers: Mahler, Gustav
Artists: Järvi, Paavo · Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich
Paavo Järvi and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich present the second part of their complete Mahler cycle – with the First Symphony, known as “Titan,” after the novel of the same name by the poet Jean Paul, whom Mahler greatly admired. Although Mahler rejected this title three years after the symphony’s premiere in 1893, the work – like many of Mahler’s compositions – has, according to Paavo Järvi, “a distinctly programmatic character. Mahler was a composer who could explore and question the inner world of man in a unique way, delving into what takes place in our innermost depths.”
