Tudor
Composers: Mahler, Gustav
Artists: Bamberger Symphoniker · Nott, Jonathan
Ever since the Bamberger Symphoniker and Jonathan Nott began tackling the symphonies of Gustav Mahler, they have been writing a special chapter in recording history. Every recording released so far has caused a stir, because in addition to a mastery of musical craft, it has repeatedly opened up new perspectives. And now, with the Seventh Symphony, we encounter a masterpiece that was described by Theodor W. Adorno as a “weak piece.” There is no sign of such unsettling assessments in Jonathan Nott and his orchestra. He presents a magnificent work in its formal structure, its orchestration, and above all, its content. “My time will come,” Gustav Mahler once said. This is especially true of the Seventh Symphony, for its time has come with this recording—the time of limited analysis and bewilderment is over: at last, the music speaks!
