Description

This new recording of Jean-Baptiste Lully's musical tragedy from March 2024, which premiered 348 years earlier in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, is the result of the latest historical, musicological, and organological research. The arrangement of the orchestra, the number and distribution of the musicians, and the timbres of the instruments, especially the wind instruments: the instructions in the 1676 libretto were conscientiously followed by Alexis Kossenko and Benoît Dratwicki, the artistic director of the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles. The selection of soloists was based as much as possible on the characteristics of the singers who performed the work at its premiere, insofar as their vocal and acting qualities are known. The result is a top-class vocal ensemble, including Mathias Vidal, Véronique Gens, Sandrine Piau, Tassis Christoyannis, Hasnaa Bennani, Eléonore Pancrazi, Adrien Fournaison, David Witczak, as well as the Pages and Chantres du CMBV (a group of children and adults) and Les Ambassadeurs – La Grande Écurie, all of whom are experts in this repertoire.
