Rachel Podger, violinist and musical director of Brecon Baroque, plays sonatas by composer Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber with her ensemble on the album “Just Biber”. They were selected from his 1681 collection Sonatæ Violino Solo and are extremely virtuosic works. Biber enjoyed distorting the sound of the violin, having it imitate animal voices, and surprising the listener. The sonatas, dedicated to Archbishop Maximilian Gandolf, were intended not only to delight but also possibly to soothe and heal; Biber described the sonatas as a kind of prayer for the archbishop’s long life and good health.
