Portrait of Heinrich Biber

Biber, Heinrich Ignaz Franz

Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber was born in 1644 in Stráž pod Ralskem and died in 1704 in Salzburg. Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber was a Czech-Austrian composer. Biber worked in Graz and Kroměříž before illegally leaving his employer, Prince-Bishop Karl Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn, and settling in Salzburg. Biber was one of the most significant violin composers in the history of the instrument. His own technique allowed him to easily reach the sixth and seventh positions, employ multiple registers in complex polyphonic passages, and explore the various possibilities of scordatura tuning. His independent, expressive, imaginative, influential, and enduring musical legacy remains vibrant worldwide and continues to be received with great interest.
