Description

Angelic choirs, lullabies, hymns to Mary – the themes of Christmas carols are similar in all countries of Europe. And yet every country, every region has its own distinctive tone. This is surely due not least to the fact that no festival is so closely connected with popular culture as Christmas and reaches so far back into the past. The selection of Christmas compositions presented here spans from the Middle Ages to the present day – from an unknown 15th-century composer of sacred music to Jan Sandström. Benjamin Britten's A Ceremony of Carols is certainly central here, as it is also based on old carols and is one of the most beautiful choral cycles on the theme of Christmas ever. The Estonian composer Arvo Pärt also draws on the Middle Ages with his Magnificat antiphons – a magical musical language between the archaic and the modern. Francis Poulenc's Christmas motets come from a different sound world: he creates a mystical soundscape, which he illuminates with colors of great brilliance. Refined yet light and graceful are the Christmas song settings by Heinrich Kaminski, one of the great composers of German late Romanticism, who should definitely be rediscovered.
