Haydn: Symphonies Nos. 84 - 86

Joseph Haydn composed the three symphonies on this album, the fifth installment in the "Late Symphonies" series, in the mid-1780s with a sense of triumph. Although he remained in the service of the Esterházy family, he had recently been permitted to publish his music himself and accept outside commissions. A series of symphonies was subsequently commissioned by a new, large ensemble that had recently been founded in Paris. Although superficially similar, they reveal Haydn's inexhaustible creativity, whether in the astonishingly colorful introduction to No. 84, the rustic intermezzi in the trio movement of No. 85 – a favorite of Marie Antoinette – or in the greatest of the Parisian symphonies, No. 86 – here the transition from the slow introduction to the main movement is unparalleled in his oeuvre. Adam Fischer and the Danish Chamber Orchestra are known for their recordings of music from the Classical period. Their interpretation of the Haydn symphonies is particularly distinguished by dynamic contrasts, clarity, and an approach reminiscent of chamber music.
