Composers: Haydn, Franz Joseph
Artists: Antonini, Giovanni · Basel Chamber Orchestra
The eleventh part of the symphonic cycle Haydn2032 focuses on Paris: ‘One sees and admires more and more each day the creations of this great genius, who understands so well how to derive rich and varied developments from a single theme in each of his works,’ wrote the Mercure de France in April 1788, adding that Haydn was ‘completely different from those sterile composers who are constantly scrambling from one idea to the next...’. The symphonies presented here are No. 2 (the first to be published in France), No. 24 (the first to be performed in France), and the so-called “Paris” symphonies No. 87 and No. 82 “L'Ours,” with their allusions to the atmosphere of the fairgrounds and their famous contrapuntal finale. This limited and numbered edition contains two vinyl LPs, a photo album by Jean Gaumy (Magnum Photos), and a wonderful, previously unpublished text by the writer Hanns-Josef Ortheil entitled “How I Could Speak of Joseph Haydn”.
