Description

This album brings together two major British violin concertos composed a century apart, in 1910 and 2005. Edward Elgar's passionate violin concerto, completed in 1910, is a three-movement classically romantic violin concerto. This monumental and emotionally charged work emerged during the Modern era and was neglected for several decades before entering the standard concert repertoire. Christian Tetzlaff follows the example of early recordings of Elgar's concerto here, with significantly faster tempi than most modern recordings. Thomas Adès' violin concerto "Concentric Paths" is already a modern classic and undoubtedly one of the most important concertos written in this century. With its highly demanding violin part, the work contains all the elements of a true concerto and allows the soloist to sing with their instrument. Christian Tetzlaff is considered one of the world's leading violinists and has an extensive concert schedule. His recording of Béla Bartók's violin concertos was awarded the Gramophone Award and the ICMA Award and was a finalist for the BBC Music Award in 2019. Several of his albums have been awarded the "German Record Critics' Award". In addition, Christian Tetzlaff was named "Artist of the Year" by the ICMA in 2015 and received the ECHO Award as "Instrumentalist of the Year" in 2017. The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the world's most renowned broadcasting ensembles, has delighted audiences for over 100 years with its distinctive energy, its rapid playing style, and its iconic musical character. John Storgårds is the chief conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the first guest conductor of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, Canada. He enjoys a dual career as a conductor and violin virtuoso and is widely known for his creative sense of programming and his captivating yet refined performances.
