Portrait of Edward Elgar

Elgar, Edward

Edward Elgar was born in 1857 in Lower Broadheath and died in 1934 in Worcester. Edward Elgar was an English composer. Among his best-known compositions are orchestral works such as the Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, concertos for violin and cello, as well as two symphonies. He also composed choral works, including The Dream of Gerontius, chamber music, and songs. In 1924, he was appointed Master of the King's Music. Although Elgar is often regarded as a typically English composer, most of his musical influences came not from England, but from continental Europe. His distinctive, expressive music is still frequently performed today. His independent, expressive, imaginative, and influential musical legacy lives on.
