Vladimir Ashkenazy is one of the most prominent pianists and conductors. Trained at the Moscow Conservatory by the legendary Lev Oborin, the long-time duo partner of David Oistrakh, he won the Brussels Reine Elisabeth Competition in 1956 and finally first prize at the world-famous Tchaikovsky Competition in 1962, which opened the doors to an international career and instantly established him as one of the leading pianists of his generation. Ashkenazy's recording of Debussy's Nocturnes has been considered a highly sought-after reference recording for decades. However, although Ashkenazy has repeatedly performed individual pieces from the Préludes in concert, some of which are documented on live recordings, the pianist has never before recorded both volumes of the Préludes in their entirety.
