Bossi: Piano Works

Giulio Giurato performs 16 piano pieces by the Italian composer and organist Marco Enrico Bossi (1861–1925). They come from four collections published between 1895 and 1914. The “Quatre Pièces” op. 103 draw on forms from an old suite in “Preludio,” “Gavotta,” “Aria variata,” and “Presto.” The finale reprises a theme from the first piece, linking all four movements. The three pieces op. 106 strike a different note: the tender “Tendresse” is followed by the somber “Histoire douloureuse” and the waltz-like “Enjouement.”

In op. 109, “Mazurka” and “Fileuse” are paired with the slow “Ultimo canto” and a “Toccata.” Bossi’s later “Cinque Pezzi” op. 137 range from two preludes to the intermezzi “Momento appassionato” and “Sogno,” and culminate in a powerful “Studio.” Giurato studied in Bologna and now teaches chamber music at the Parma Conservatory.
