Die Kölner Akademie, under the artistic direction of Michael Alexander Willens, presents Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Lutheran Masses” BWV 233–236. These are the four Kyrie-Gloria masses composed in the 1730s, a period of profound artistic consolidation. They show Bach at his most inventive. The masses, which largely derive from his best cantatas, exemplify his unparalleled ability to transform older material through sophisticated counterpoint, rich orchestration, and a deep sensitivity to the Latin Ordinary. Long overshadowed by the Mass in B Minor, these so-called “Lutheran Masses” prove to be brilliant creations, each designed with architectural clarity: six movements that strike a perfect balance between choral grandeur and intimate arias. In this cycle, Bach blends theological tradition with innovative musical craftsmanship. Whether he is reworking festive choruses, expanding expressive arias, or integrating older settings with newly imagined tone colors, he elevates the transformation of earlier works into a profound creative process, creating music that appears both familiar and entirely new. By bringing the four masses together into a unified artistic vision, Die Kölner Akademie illuminates their shared structural features, their vibrant instrumentation, and their emotional range. Die Kölner Akademie is an ensemble including a choir that features a diverse program ranging from the Baroque to contemporary music and has received many awards for it. Die Kölner Akademie performs at international festivals and can also be heard on television and radio, including outside of Germany. Among other things, it has recorded the complete piano concertos of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Carl Maria von Weber, and Felix Mendelssohn—all highly praised by the press.
