This box set documents Andris Nelsons' work with two world-class orchestras. Following the death of Claudio Abbado, the Latvian conductor took over the leadership of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra in 2014 and 2015, which he himself described as the "greatest challenge" of his career to date. In the recording of his first concert with the orchestra, Nelsons explored the musical landscape of the German Romantic composer Johannes Brahms. A year later, he turned his attention to the interpretation of two works by Mahler. For his inaugural concert as the new Gewandhauskapellmeister, Andris Nelsons chose pieces with symbolic power: the "Scottish" Symphony by his arguably most important predecessor, Felix Mendelssohn, and Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto, played by Baiba Skride. A recording of Dvořák’s "From the New World" symphony as well as arias with Kristine Opolais bear witness to the beginning of a close relationship between the Gewandhaus Orchestra and its Chief Conductor.
