Vasks, Pēteris
Pēteris Vasks was born in 1946 in Aizpute, Latvia. His musical training began with the piano and violin, and later he devoted himself particularly to the double bass. He studied in Vilnius and worked with various symphony and chamber orchestras before studying composition under Valentin Utkin in Riga. This intensive experience as a performing musician forms an important background to his creative work. Vasks is one of the leading contemporary Latvian composers. His music provides access to a distinctive artistic voice of the Baltics. Different instrumentation and interpretations make its expressive possibilities audible and invite listeners to connect familiar works with new musical discoveries.
