Varèse, Edgard
Edgard Varèse was born in Paris in 1883 and died in New York City in 1965. Edgard Varèse was a French and American avant-garde composer. His music continues to be frequently performed, recorded, and studied by musicians and audiences around the world. Varèse remarked that “to stubbornly conditioned ears, anything new in music has always been called noise,” and asked the question, “What is music but organized noise?” Although his complete surviving works last only about three hours, he has been acknowledged as an influence by several major composers of the late 20th century. His musical legacy remains vibrant worldwide and continues to be attentively received.
