Rihm, Wolfgang

Wolfgang Rihm was born in Karlsruhe in 1952 and died in Ettlingen in 2024. The German composer studied under, among others, Eugen Werner Velte, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Klaus Huber. He gained international attention with the performance of Morphonie – Sektor IV at the Donaueschinger Musiktagen in 1974. In addition to his compositional work, he shaped several generations of musicians as a teacher at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe. Rihm's artistic thinking was in close dialogue with literature, painting, and music history. His works invite listeners to discover the expressive possibilities of contemporary music from different perspectives. Concert performances and recordings make this extensive body of work accessible and repeatedly open up new encounters with his musical language.
