Lehár, Franz
Franz Lehár was born in 1870 in Komorn, today’s Komárno, and died in 1948 in Bad Ischl. The Austro-Hungarian composer was one of the defining figures of early 20th-century operetta. Growing up as the son of a military bandmaster, he was immersed in music from an early age and became acquainted with diverse cultural traditions through frequent moves. His name is particularly associated with the so-called Silver Age of operetta. Lehár’s stage music thrives on the combination of vocal melodies, dance, and compelling dramatic situations. Performances and recordings provide access not only to his popular melodies but also to broader musical contexts. As such, his work remains a cornerstone of operetta culture.
