Winterberg: Chamber Music Vol. 3

Hans Winterberg belongs to the generation of the so-called “Theresienstadt composers,” whose works have only recently been rediscovered. The composer, who studied in Prague, combined influences from different musical traditions: elements of Leoš Janáček’s music meet inspirations from the Second Viennese School and French Impressionism. Winterberg himself saw himself as a bridge-builder between Eastern and Western Europe.

The third album in the Winterberg series presents four works from different periods of his career: the Quintet for Violin, Two Clarinets, Horn and Piano from 1935, String Quartet No. 2 from 1942, the Rhapsody for Trombone and Piano from 1951, and the late Quintet for Clarinet and String Quartet from 1981/82. Three of the works appear here for the first time, and String Quartet No. 2 is presented in its entirety for the first time. For these recordings, all the compositions were newly edited from the surviving manuscripts in collaboration with the Exilarte Research Centre of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and Boosey & Hawkes.

The performers are the Adamello Quartet, clarinetists Stephan Mörth and Richard Obermayer, horn player Una Weske, trombonist Tomer Maschkowski, and pianist Holger Groschopp.
