Weinberg's final opera based on Dostoevsky's novel condenses the plot without losing its psychological depth. Prince Myshkin, mentally ill but believing in goodness, meets the merchant Rogozhin on a train, triggering a story of dependency, madness, and murder. Rediscovered in the last decade, the opera presents the composer Weinberg as an equal to Shostakovich. The Idiot, composed between 1986 and 1989 and staged in Salzburg in 2024, directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski and conducted by Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, brings the world of literature to the opera stage. The outstanding cast of singers contributed to the production's great success. Bogdan Volkov "moves the heart as an expressive lyric tenor in the piano passages, yet remains more than capable of meeting all the orchestral storms" (BR Klassik).
