Weidemann: Flute Sonatas

With "Charles Weidemann – Flute Sonatas," flutist Jan De Winne, cellist Ira Givol, and harpsichordist and organist Stanislav Gres present a recording of key works by the German-British composer Charles (Carl Friedrich) Weidemann. From the mid-1720s, Weidemann performed in George Frideric Handel's London opera orchestra and shaped the city's musical life for decades.

The selected sonatas from Opus 1 – composed around 1737 – display Weidemann's galant style, his clear melodic phrasing, and a musical language that incorporates influences from the French violin tradition as well as elements of the London opera scene. Surprising harmonic twists, dance-like movements, and expressive slow movements define these early solo sonatas for transverse flute and basso continuo.

The recording highlights Weidemann's compositional profile across different keys and instrumental textures: transverse flute with harpsichord, organ, and baroque cello. This provides a focused insight into early 18th-century London flute music and the signature of a composer who developed an independent voice at the intersection of operatic practice, chamber music, and the courtly context.
