Wagner: Wesendonck Lieder / Bruckner: Symphony No. 4

Christian Thielemann is a passionate advocate of specifically German music; his program at the 2020 Salzburg Festival with the Vienna Philharmonic was entirely dedicated to his preferred repertoire. On his long-awaited return to the summer festival, he opens with Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder (in the orchestration by Felix Mottl) with the Latvian mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča as soloist. The centerpiece of his acclaimed concerts was Bruckner's Symphony No. 4. Der Standard summarized: "Together with an orchestra that breathes with her, Garanča provided proof that she is currently the ne plus ultra in the mezzo-soprano category. A magnificent fusion of intensity and noble tone."
