This new production of Wagner's final opera, his mythical masterpiece Parsifal, has caused a sensation worldwide since its premiere in Berlin. Both the musical performance and the production have been hailed as outstanding. The cast is packed with stars, from the orchestra pit of the Staatsoper Berlin with its music director Daniel Barenboim to the ranks of singers with modern Wagnerian references such as René Pape, Matthias Hölle, and Anja Kampe. The production by renowned director Dmitri Tcherniakov is bursting with special effects, relocates the action to a war zone, and pays homage to world religions as well as esoteric moments. It also stands out for its provocative elements and, above all, creates an enormous dramatic tension that reinterprets Wagner's Parsifal and makes it seem strikingly relevant today.
