Who would have guessed that the legendary Hans Knappertsbusch conducted Lohengrin in Munich 16 times after the war—and that a recording of one of those performances even exists!? There may be a touch of pride from Wagner’s city of Munich in the fact that the Elberfeld-born musician, who made Munich his home by choice, conducted Lohengrin here but never in Bayreuth. Until now, the catalogue had no recording of Knappertsbusch conducting Lohengrin, so Wagnerians are sure to rejoice at this sensational archival discovery. With Kurt Böhme, Astrid Varnay and many others, this also features a vocal cast that seems fantastic by today’s standards, with the then very young Brigitte Fassbaender among the three “noble pages” as a curiosity.
