Among the prominent musicians born in Pavia, Franco Vittadini is undoubtedly one of the most distinguished. The Istituto Superiore di Studi Musicali there is named after him, and he served as its director from 1924 until his death. Maria Cecilia Farina plays the composer's organ works on historic organs, adhering precisely and philologically to the score. Occasionally—and always with due regard for the liturgical context—Vittadini employs a grand and solemn language, utilizing the organ in its full sonorous richness or giving way to virtuoso displays. Rather, his stylistic hallmark is a gentle melancholy: a twilight-like atmosphere comparable to the poetry of Guido Gozzano or Sergio Corazzini, and a contemplative, idyllicly nostalgic attitude that pervades his works and expresses his faith.
