“Un ballo in maschera” is a moving love story between two complex, mature characters who are torn between their desires, their loyalty, and the inevitable consequences of their decisions. In this production, director Vincent Boussart delves deeply into the theme of masks and reveals a fascinating interplay of drama and comedy, human duplicity, lies, and truth. A minimalist set contrasts with the costumes by Christian Lacroix, which dress the chorus and protagonists alternately in contemporary fashion and costumes reminiscent of the 18th century. The press particularly praised the two male leads, Piotr Beczala as Riccardo and Carlos Alvarez as Renato. Renato Palumbo, internationally renowned as an expert in Italian opera, conducts the symphony orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.
