Herbert von Karajan conducted Giuseppe Verdi's "Messa da Requiem" countless times and also recorded it several times. This Blu-ray shows him with some of the greatest singers of the time (1984): Anna Tomowa-Sintow, Agnès Baltsa, José Carreras and José van Dam. Verdi composed his Requiem in 1873 and 74, between "Aida" and "Othello", for Alessandro Manzoni, a poet he greatly admired. It is not designed for performance in church, but in concert halls. In addition to its profound spirituality, the work also exhibits the most impressive characteristics of Verdi's operas: almost endless melodic lines and deeply moving musical-dramatic effects.
