Description

“Don Carlos,” based on Schiller’s play of the same name, is perhaps Giuseppe Verdi’s most ambitious work. He composed it in 1865/66 for the Paris Opéra, in the tradition of French Grand opéra. This live recording, now available on Blu-ray, captures the legendary performance at the 1986 Salzburg Easter Festival under the baton of Herbert von Karajan. The exceptional cast—with José Carreras and Agnes Baltsa in the leading roles—and the magnificent set design make this production one of the most unforgettable opera performances ever staged.
