Based on the literary foundation of the romantic tragedy “Attila, King of the Huns” by Zacharias Werner, written in 1809, Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Attila” was created almost 40 years later. Both the drama and the opera deal with the later years of the Hunnic king, and the opera begins with Attila planning an attack on Rome with his Hunnic army. Rome, on the other hand, is on high alert and tries to keep the danger at bay… As he had done in “Nabucco” and “I Lombardi,” Verdi also knew how to season the plot of his “Attila” with several patriotic choruses that, in a time of Italian unification efforts, brought him and his work great success.
