Tchaikovsky: Pique Dame (Großes Festspielhaus, Salzburg 2018, Directed by: Mancini)

Hans Neuenfels, a leading figure in modern director’s theatre, presented a thoroughly convincing and multifaceted production of Tchaikovsky’s Pique Dame at the 2018 Salzburg Festival. Set against Christian Schmidt’s minimalist, largely abstract stage designs, Neuenfels wove together “the captivating performances of a powerful cast” (The New York Times) into a “dreamlike production” (FAZ). The cast, strong even in its smallest roles, featured Brandon Jovanovich and Evgenia Muraveva excelling in the title roles of Hermann and Lisa, while the ever-charismatic and vocally powerful Hanna Schwarz shone as the Countess. Mariss Jansons, always superbly prepared, could be seen at the podium of the Vienna Philharmonic for one of his rare appearances as an opera conductor. The press was unanimous: “Another triumph in this sweltering festival summer” (Neue Zürcher Zeitung); “Mariss Jansons is perhaps the foremost authority on this unjustly neglected opera” (Süddeutsche Zeitung). This outstanding production of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece on every level is truly a must-see for all opera lovers.
