Tchaikovsky Overtures

For his three-part abstract production of the Bavarian State Ballet, choreographer Alexei Ratmansky selected several overtures by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, which he had composed for performance in symphonic concerts at different stages of his life. Thematically, all the musical works are based on dramas by William Shakespeare: "Hamlet", "The Tempest" and "Romeo and Juliet". Although Alexei Ratmansky did not create a narrative ballet, the narrative motifs from Shakespeare's three works repeatedly surface in the choreographic structure. In this way, Shakespeare's "voice" forms the basis for both the dance action on stage and the music sounding from the orchestra pit. Mikhail Agrest conducts the Bavarian State Orchestra. Live recording from the Nationaltheater München from December 2022.
