Description

"Sleeping Beauty" premiered in St. Petersburg in 1890 featuring Pyotr Tchaikovsky's immortal music. In his version for the Zurich Ballet, Christian Spuck brings the classic to life in his own artistic style. With a great deal of humor, he explores the complex process of growing up, addressing such themes as the generation gap with parents, the difficulties of coming of age, and, not least, love and sexuality. Whenever possible, he frees the characters from their traditional role clichés. Petipa’s original version becomes a template that Christian Spuck occasionally cites, but repeatedly questions and counteracts with irony and, at times, unsettling moments.
