Peter Wright’s production of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” has been part of the repertoire since its premiere by the Royal Ballet in 1984. The choreography, based on Lev Ivanov, tells the Christmas story of Clara, the Nutcracker, and the Prince, leading from the festively decorated Stahlbaum family home to the Kingdom of Sweets. Julia Trevelyan Oman’s stage designs and costumes bring the story’s various settings to life.
Marianna Tsembenhoi stars as Clara, while Taisuke Nakao takes on the dual role of Hans-Peter/The Nutcracker. Mayara Magri dances the Sugar Plum Fairy, Reece Clarke plays the Prince, and James Hay is Herr Drosselmeyer. The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House performs under the baton of Charlotte Politi.
In addition to the recording of the Royal Ballet production, this release includes bonus material such as interviews with members of the company about the work and production, an insight into a rehearsal of the Snowflakes with Darcey Bussell, and a cast gallery.
