Treasures from the New World Vol. 4

On this album, I Musicanti, led by double bassist Leon Bosch and joined by Brazilian pianist Clélia Iruzun, dedicate themselves to the chamber music of Brazil after Heitor Villa-Lobos. The works of composers Edmundo Villani-Côrtes, João Guilherme Ripper, Arrigo Barnabé, José Carlos Amaral Vieira, and Marisa Rezende—who are virtually unknown in this country—impressively showcase the stylistic diversity of 20th and 21st-century Brazilian music and open up exciting new perspectives.

All the works were written for the instrumentation of Schubert’s famous “Trout Quintet” (i.e., piano, violin, viola, cello, and double bass) and combine European chamber music traditions with Brazilian rhythms and tone colors. In addition to the premiere recording of João Guilherme Ripper’s “From My Window No. 3,” the album presents a varied program ranging from folkloric echoes to impressionistic colors and contemporary expressiveness, interpreted by musicians who have been committed to this repertoire for many years.
