Torres: Amoroso Señor

Although José de Torres is practically unknown today, he enjoyed great renown among his contemporaries, so that his works were widely circulated in the Hispanic territories. It is therefore no coincidence that the four cantatas selected for this CD can still be found today in the cathedrals of Mexico and Guatemala.

José de Torres's late cantatas show the assimilation of the latest musical trends, always in a personal and highly original way. While Torres in his early cantatas, composed in the 1710s, mixed recitatives and arias with other genres of late 17th-century Hispanic musical practice, such as coplas, seguidillas, graves, minuets, estribillos, or fugues, he decided in his late cantatas to follow the standardized pattern of a sequence of recitatives and arias.
