Description

Hans Abrahamsen's opera "The Snow Queen" follows Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale of the same name: Two children, Gerda and Kay, are close friends and seem destined for each other. Then something stabs Kay in the heart and eye, and suddenly they are estranged, as if they lived in two different worlds. Kidnapped by the Snow Queen, Kay also physically disappears from Gerda's life. This begins her long search for her friend, until she finds him again in the snow and ice and weeps the devilish shards out of him with her tears. The music, with its finely shifting structures and subtly altered repetitions, gives the text depth and at the same time a magical lightness.
